Situated in the heart of Leeds, The Horse & Trumpet Hotel has a reputation for serving quality cask ales in a traditional pub environment.

The Horse and Trumpet is situated in the centre of Leeds in the middle of the main shopping area with many theatres and museums close by.

The name of the pub is thought to derive from County Yeomanry Cavalry regiments that were very popular at this time, in the wake of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars (1790 to 1815).

The original address for the Horse & Trumpet was No. 2, The Upper Headrow which in 1933 was widened by joining this street with Nether Headrow (previously Nelson Street) and this then became one street called The Headrow.  No. 1, The Upper Headrow was the site of The Chancery of St Mary Magdalene - this building was later demolished.

The alley behind the Thornton’s building was originally wider and had an exit into Lands Lane, which was called The Horse and Trumpet yard.  Between 1953 and 2000, the City Varieties Theatre had their front entrance in the alley and the original theatre stage-door can still be seen at the top of the alley today.

The Horse & Trumpet became a listed building in 1988 after it had been in the possession of Tetley’s Brewery for over 100 years.
