Positioned in the centre of Shrewsbury, The Hole in the Wall is Market Street’s main tourist attraction with historic vaults adding to the pubs character.

Legend has it that pubs cellars were once the debtors’ prison.  The sign outside pictures a despondent debtor imprisoned in the Vaults.

Between two arches is an entrance to the cellars (believed to be the debtors’ prison) carved through the sandstone wall along which in the corner between the entrance and north west wall, is an unusual arch going deep into the sandstone through which it is carved.  Its date is uncertain and although it looks like a fireplace, records suggest that it could be a later staircase, added to give access to the upper floors when the house was incorporated into Jacobean and Elizabethan houses now surrounding it.

Originally the home of the Princess of Powis, The Hole in the Wall had extensive walled gardens stretching from Market Street to the boundary of the old St. Chads church, enclosing the hall built in 1325 and the domestic quarters, which forms part of the pub.  It later passed to the Shutt family, who, at the time, were rumoured to have strong connections with William the Conqueror.
