The Green Dragon is situated just off the main square in Beverley and is so big that the ends of the pub have different addresses.
Pub records go back to 1746 when it was known as the Malt House - the name comes from the malt ale they used to brew and sell on the premises. It was re-named the Green Dragon in 1765.
The actual building itself dates back to the middle of the 17th Century. There are claims that it was an ale house when it was built, even though it was unlicensed.
The Green Dragon has been popular with soldiers in both World Wars. It is said that the ghost of the Green Dragon is that of a young Danish soldier who was in the service of William III. He fought a duel over a woman and killed one of his comrades. Dueling was against regulations and as such, the soldier was executed. This was the last beheading to take place in 1689 on Corn Hill, now called Saturday Market. There is a memorial plaque on the south wall of St. Mary’s Church to both men. It reads:
“Here two young Danifh Soldiers lye
The one on quarrell chanc’d to die
The others head, by their own law
With sword was fever’d at one blow
December the 23rd 1689”
