Situated in Witney, the Eagle Vaults once had a tunnel that went under the road from the Town Hall to ‘The Vaults’.  According to the tale, supporters of the King used to hide there from the Roundheads.

At one time ‘The Vaults’ was just a one bar alehouse, but after extension and renovation it has now become a modern public house. It is an historic building dating from the 17th Century and was re-fronted in c.1850.

Before the pub was enlarged to take in the adjoining shop, ghostly footsteps were sometimes heard coming from under the shop’s floorboards, so beware of ghostly sightings.

The sign of the ‘Eagle’ is also the sign of the Clinch Brewery and the name ‘Vaults’ came about because ale was once brewed in the vaults for the pub.
