Located in picturesque Datchet, one of Shakespeare’s favourite villages, The Royal Stag dates back to the 1500s and is the oldest building in Datchet. It was originally known as the Five Bells, due to its proximity to the village church, before changing its name to the Royal Stag in 1796.

Given its long history, it is not surprising that the pub is reputed to be haunted by a ghostly handprint said to appear on a downstairs windowpane.  Currently displayed in the pub is a photograph taken in 1979 that shows the handprint – allegedly that of child who died outside in the churchyard while waiting for its drunken father on a dark night.  The Royal Stag’s ghostly connections are further strengthened by the presence of a broken tombstone in the rear bar, belonging to William Herbert who died in 1705.  When the nearby church was extended, many tombstones were removed and those damaged stones were subsequently used as slab flooring in the pub.

The Royal Stag brings a contemporary flavour to the traditional country pub, with a mixture of retro kitsch and Victorian pub furnishings.  The Traditional Sunday Roast is not to be missed while weekend barbeques make it the perfect summer destination.  The pub also boasts an extensive range of real ales such as Old Speckled Hen and London Pride, as well as new and old world wines.
