A city with history, great food and award-winning beaches. What more could you wish for?
As the grand terminus to the coast-to-coast, C2C cycle route – which starts in Whitehaven, Cumbria – you know Sunderland has to be worth the trip. After 140 gruelling miles, you’d want something pretty special, wouldn’t you! Set on the mouth of the River Wear, the city’s trump card is that it has re-energised itself. The shipyards now glisten and handsome rows of Georgian and Victorian buildings have been buffed and polished – all without losing the city’s warm and friendly soul. But the icing on the cake is that Sunderland’s still only minutes from award-winning beaches, peaceful nature reserves and fresh and sparkling green countryside.
