Sheffield architecture

In the centre of Sheffield Persistence Works is the UK's first purpose-built fine art and craft studio complex. A low-use energy and low maintenance building, it  provides a permanent base for around 68 artists and makers including painters, sculptors, jewellers, furniture makers and ceramicists. Much of the architectural metalwork was carried out by some of the occupying artists. The nearby Millennium Galleries and Winter Garden is an outstanding attraction. The galleries are a fine venue for the visual arts and displays of craft and design, and the Winter Garden is the largest city-centre botanical garden in Britain. The gallery breaks with the traditional 'formal' image of an art gallery and is a welcoming and vibrant place with four individual galleries under one roof. The calm and precise design of the galleries are in sharp contrast to the Winter Garden glasshouse with its giant animal-like rib-cage roof structure.

Wherever possible we have tried to choose schemes that are available for the general public to appreciate, that are near to one another, and can be enjoyed on foot. There are other RIBA award-winning buildings at this destination.

www.architecture.com has details of all nationally awarded winners since 2002.
