Peterborough city secrets
Travelling a few miles outside the city takes you into some haunting and evocative countryside...
Cuckoo's Hollow
Redesigned by the Peterborough Development Corporation in the 1970s, Cuckoo's Hollow is an important wildlife habitat that is now home to a variety of birdlife such as water rails and warblers, and provides nesting habitats for ducks, swans and coots. Trees and shrubs were planted, and footpaths and bridges were also constructed as the site was excavated and shaped.
The Boardwalks
A wildlife-rich site, declared a Nature Reserve in 1991, and dotted with nature-friendly ponds. Located alongside the River Nene at Thorpe Meadows, this reserve contains ponds, marsh, grassland, scrub and willow trees. It is also home to a variety of wildlife including toads, frogs, water beetles and grass snakes. Local volunteers have made it a haven for wildlife and a great place for visitors to enjoy.
Eye Green
Formerly occupied by a brickworks, this 24-acre nature reserve, boasting woodland, reed beds and a lakeside footpath - with fishing platforms for people with mobility difficulties, also includes a geological site of scientific interest. It is managed and maintained on behalf of Peterborough City council by the Wildlife Trust.
