Nottingham architecture

Nottingham is a city full of contrasts, and providing some of the greatest are several RIBA award-winning new buildings, which can be viewed on a walk through some of the lesser-known areas of the city. Close to the station, Loxley House, a building of the Capital One group, is a large redevelopment, compatible with the existing buildings, with an attractive terrace leading onto the Canal. Nearby in London Road is the Grade II listed building Low Level Station. Originally Nottingham's first station (1857), this highly decorative building has been conserved and sensitively redeveloped into the Holmes Place fitness centre, whilst retaining the magnificent structure that was the train shed. Somewhat further out of the city centre is the new National College for School Leadership building on the Jubilee Campus, on the Triumph Road Campus.  Hardly surprising that it has been declared a leading example of architectural excellence in the East Midlands, with its inverted cone-like structure set on an island platform at the head of an artificial lake. Also worth a special trip, and within easy reach of the city is the Attenborough Nature Centre - a state-of-the-art eco-friendly building, surrounded by water, in the heart of a picturesque nature reserve.

Wherever possible we have tried to choose schemes that are available for the general public to appreciate, that are near to one another, and can be enjoyed on foot. There are other RIBA award-winning buildings at this destination.

www.architecture.com has details of all nationally awarded winners since 2002.
