Newcastle Gateshead Shopping

Newcastle Gateshead is every shopaholic’s dream and has everything from flea markets to designer furniture, from buzzy high street stores to chic boutiques and lots of hidden gems and fair share of treasure troves.

Try the Central Station area and up into Grainger Town. Visit Space (Pink Lane) for contemporary home accessories with a retro twist.  Mint (Old George Yard) has an array of chic nic-nacs and jewellery, and opposite, Attica is an Aladdin’s cave for vintage clothing. For hip street clothes, visit High Bridge with Union, or nearby Nitro (Grainger Street) and Traveller (Grey Street).

Pride of place must go to the massive Gateshead MetroCentre (www.metrocentre-gateshead.co.uk/) – Europe’s largest shopping and leisure centre.  Eldon Square (www.eldon-square.co.uk/) in the heart of Newcastle city centre is just as impressive with over 140 shops, including department stores John Lewis and Fenwick. Eldon Garden (www.eldon-square.co.uk/), just around the corner, is home to posh and highly appealing fashion and furniture stores.

Central Arcade and Monument Mallare both attractive covered malls offer some great shopping.  The main shopping area in Newcastle between Northumberland Street and Grainger Street is compact enough to be user friendly.

Or if you are looking for craft, art or antiques take the Metro to Jesmond where there are lots of antiques shops. Or try the Newcastle Arts Centre on Westgate Road, The Laing Art Gallery shop and the Gateshead Quay Visitor Centre for selections of handmade cards, pottery, jewellery and glassware.  There are plenty of places to buy art – try Colliers on Dean Street, The Biscuit Factory, Artworks  and the David Welsh Gallery & Studio.
