Newcastle Gateshead Eating out
Out-of-towners don’t immediately associate the North East with fantastic food - more broon ale, stottie cake and fishes on dishes. Which just goes to show how wrong you can be, because the quality and diversity of Newcastle Gateshead’s food is first class.
Betty’s Bar/Café/Diner is the place to eat in the pink triangle. It is fully licensed with a wide selection of hot and cold food.
Or, if you’re into gourmet dining, there’s plenty to choose from. Award winning chef Terry Laybourne’s Café 21 and Café Live are among the best in town – classy, contemporary cooking that never descends to the faddish. Café 21 boasts a Michelin Star, proof indeed of its outstanding quality. Another great restaurant is the Fisherman’s Lodge. Located in the heart of Jesmond Dene, a picturesque wooded valley just one mile from the centre of Newcastle Gateshead, this charming restaurant serves some of the freshest fish you’ll ever eat.
If you fancy something a tad more exotic then head for Stowell Street’s superb Chinese restaurants. There’s also Fujiyama - a Japanese teppan-yaki restaurant situated in Bath Lane. The Biscuit Factory is an excellent eatery attached to one of England's largest commercial art galleries.
Blackfriars is one of Newcastle's best-loved restaurants, with an AA rosette and honourable mentions in both the Good Food and Michelin Guides. The food is an eclectic blend of European and Asian flavours, with a wine list ranked as one of the 20 best lists in the UK by Restaurant Magazine (www.restaurantmagazine.co.uk/).
