Newcastle architecture

The banks of the River Tyne in Newcastle and Gateshead have played host in recent years to some great award-winning architecture. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge was the winner in 2002 of the RIBA's most prestigious award, the RIBA Stirling Prize. The world's first and only tilting bridge - already affectionately known as the 'Blinking Eye' - it takes its place at the end of a line of distinguished bridges across the River Tyne. Linking Gateshead to Newcastle, the bridge is not only functional, but a great attraction. From there, access is easy to our other choices. First, BALTIC, the international centre for contemporary art, is a landmark conversion from the former Baltic Flour Mills, and is now one of the largest art spaces in Europe. Nearby, The Sage Gateshead provides an extraordinarily futuristic addition to Tyneside's changing urban landscape, and is a stunning new home for music. Then, back across the Gateshead Millennium Bridge to The Performance Academy - a very striking architectural resolution to a complex brief: the first academy of its kind in the country, with facilities unseen anywhere else in the UK.

Wherever possible we have tried to choose schemes that are available for the general public to appreciate, that are near to one another, and can be enjoyed on foot. There are other RIBA award-winning buildings at this destination.

www.architecture.com has details of all nationally awarded winners since 2002.
