Manchester architecture
Manchester has experienced an enormous amount of regeneration over the last decade, with many RIBA award-winning buildings deserving the attention of any visitor to the city. If you are arriving from the south by train you can get a glimpse of the City of Manchester Stadium, which has taken sport to the heart of east Manchester, including the 2002 Commonwealth Games. However you arrive in the city Piccadilly Station is a good place to start your walking tour. The terminal itself has about it an ease of movement and a general quality of design - more like a modern airport - that offers an atmosphere of comfort and reassurance. From there you can walk via No 1 Piccadilly Gardens to the City Art Gallery. The 2003 addition of a further gallery and education resource are invigorating modern complements to Charles Barry's grandiose Victorian designs. Head back to the pedestrianised Market Street where you will find - among other exciting new structures - the stunning elevated glass and steel Corporation Street Footbridge. From there, continue down Market Street past No 1 Deansgate, its top to toe glazing giving the block an ever shifting and shimmering appearance, to the cultural icon Urbis. This landmark island building rises steeply to a 35m high vantagepoint with Manchester spread out before it.

Wherever possible we have tried to choose schemes that are available for the general public to appreciate, that are near to one another, and can be enjoyed on foot. There are other RIBA award-winning buildings at this destination.
