From Lady Godiva to George Eliot, Mary Queen of Scots to Philip Larkin. Coventry’s ancient walls hold many secrets.
If all you know about Coventry is that it is not a good place to be sent and that a lady once rode naked through its streets, then you’re in for a big surprise. Lady Godiva still bestrides her stony mount, forever objecting to the swingeing taxes imposed on citizens by her husband Earl Leofric back in the 11th century, but all around her now is a thriving, spanking new city of which she would heartily approve. Today it’s no punishment to spend time here.
