Cambridge architecture
Visitors to Cambridge cannot fail to be aware of its standing as one of the top university towns in the country - if not the world - so it will come as no surprise that RIBA award-winning buildings selected for a walking tour are all included in the widespread campus. Begin with the new Grade 1 listed Courtyard Building at the Fitzwilliam Museum, which ingeniously combines the new with the old spaces. You could then walk across The Backs, the famous grass-covered banks of the River Cam - carpeted with crocus and daffodils in Spring - to reach the stylish Fitzwilliam College Gatehouse and Auditorium: the crisply elegant Gatehouse Court, with its combination of glass and brick work, completes the masterplan for this non-conformist Cambridge college. Closer to the centre of town is Pembroke College's Foundress Court - a sophisticated design with the unusual feature of an online sundial, standing on the site of the old Master's Lodge.
Wherever possible we have tried to choose schemes that are available for the general public to appreciate, that are near to one another, and can be enjoyed on foot. There are other RIBA award-winning buildings at this destination.
www.architecture.com has details of all nationally awarded winners since 2002.
