With a harbour as its beating heart, no wonder one of Bristol’s star attractions has a nautical theme. So it’s fitting that one of the city’s big crowd-pullers is the ss Great Britain.

When it was launched back in 1843, ss Great Britain was the biggest ship in the world and the launch itself, by Prince Albert, is seen by many as one of the key dates in British history. Fast forward 140 years or so and it arrived back in Bristol a rusting shadow of its former self. Another 35 years and £11.3million worth of work later, the ss Great Britain is back to her beautiful best and – together with the Dockyard Museum – a clear favourite among visitors.

When you eventually drag yourself off-board, follow the harbour as it weaves its way through a city centre lined with restaurants, clubs, bars, museums and arts centres. Bristol is the kind of city that surprises you more with every day you spend there.

2006 sees a celebration of the life and times of famed Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the man responsible for both Temple Meads and Clifton Suspension Bridge. And once you’ve gazed up at the bridge, there’s plenty more of the good life to be enjoyed in the pretty Georgian suburb that is Clifton itself. Or pop over to see the award-winning sights at Bristol Zoo Gardens.
