Narrow, dark, interesting and exciting

W

hen the sun’s beating down on Exeter’s historic buildings, beautiful gardens and Cathedral green, it may not seem like the obvious choice to leave all that behind and descend into some dank, dark subterranean passageways. But then you’re not about doing the obvious, are you?

Beneath Exeter’s lively streets exists a network of vaulted passages waiting to be explored. Originally built in the 14th century to transport fresh drinking water from countryside springs into the city, these tunnels have a unique history and an atmosphere to match. It is now possible to take a guided tour through these ancient tunnels and experience it for yourself.

Before you enter the narrow tunnels take some time to acquaint yourself with their history through the interactive exhibits, archaeological finds and short film. Then take a deep breath and follow your guide into the darkness. It’s worth pointing out that things can get a little claustrophobic down there.

As with anywhere without much light and lots of histories, tales of buried treasure, daring escapes, and err, ghosts on bikes abound. As you emerge, blinking into the daylight, you’ll feel the smug sense of achievement – you know Exeter’s secret.
