A Norman castle on a Roman site

W

hen your mates from Essex told you that Colchester is the real capital of England – it turns out they were right.

At least during Roman times. Back in 54AD this south-east town was home to the spectacular Temple of Claudius, built as a symbol of the Empire’s power in Britain. Unfortunately it was trashed about six years later, when Queen Boudica led an English revolt here – and she wasn’t the last to have a go.

The castle you’ll see today was a relatively ‘modern’ development, added by the Normans in 1076; not only that, but it’s the largest of its kind in Europe. So when you come here and stroke that weather-worn brickwork, you’ll be connecting with almost 2,000 years of English history.

Step inside, however, and there are even more exciting ways to get in touch with the past. Like trying on a toga (the kids love that), feeling the weight of Roman armour or getting your hands on some ancient pottery.

Or how about following a Blue Badge guide round the vaults of the old temple, for example, and onto the roof to check out the view? Let us know if you see anyone coming…
