Cider from Moorhampton Park Farm

Help yourself straight from the barrel

P

ut simply, this place is a cider drinker’s dream come true.

There are 18 varieties of ‘proper’ cider and perry (cider made from pears) – each produced from the orchards surrounding the farm.

Located in the rolling Herefordshire hills, not far from the Welsh border, Moorhampton Park Farm is the real deal: you can rock up with your own containers, and help yourself straight from the barrel (providing you’ve got the correct change, of course).

But the real beauty of the Gwatkin cider farm – aside from the undulating fields – is the opportunity to try something new. Like a pint of Old Rats Tale, Stoke Red or Foxwhelp – which are all varieties made on site.

And if you thought those names were peculiar, wait until you hear the names of the apples and pears themselves.Even if you’ve tried cider before, you’ve probably not tried it like this.

Nip to the cellar with Dennis for a tasting session and you’ll soon feel like an expert, aided by the smell of old wood barrels and pressed apples wafting in the air.

Don’t forget to leave room for some homemade sausages and chutneys from the farm shop, though.
