Don't worry, you don't have to walk up...

B

elieve it or not, when this Peak District attraction first opened its doors back in 1780, people used to scale the Heights of Abraham on foot. Worth thinking about as you sit back in the comfort of a cable car for the scenic ride to the top of this thousand foot slope.

Whatever you do, though, just don’t look down; you’ll be in danger of missing an incredible vista of the Derwent Valley as you glide up above the trees.

And this is just for starters. Once you reach the top your ticket gives you access to the two underground mining caverns, which you can explore by torchlight and experience what it was like to work as a lead minor in the 1700s.

There’s 3 exhibitions one where you can touch a fossilised Ichthyosaurus that lived alongside dinosaurs, several woodland trails to explore and – if the little ones have still got the energy – 2 adventure playgrounds, 1 with a giant slide.

Top the day off by climbing the Victorian Prospect tower to get the spectacular views out over Matlock and the Peak District beyond. Return back down on the Cable Car to complete your day out in Matlock Bath with a walk by the riverside and enjoy some traditional fish and chips.
