Inspiring visitors for 50,000 years

orget all this contemporary art business (it’s all about the concept, maan). The artists at Creswell Crags, on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border, simply painted what they saw.
Mind you, they were painting around 13,000 years ago – so their observations might seem a bit out of this world.
Located in a limestone gorge full of caves, Creswell is home to the only Ice Age rock art in Britain, which tells the gripping story of life in the last Ice Age – 50,000 to 10,000 years ago.
At Church Hole Cave, for example, you can see one of the oldest art galleries in the world, where fascinating engravings of animals, birds and exotic-looking motifs provide a fascinating insight into prehistoric Britain.
It’s not all art, though. There are stone tools and Ice Age remains on display in the museum, and you can delve into the caves themselves for a sense of what it must have been like to live in that period. Chilly, most probably.
