Mysterious grotto in Cornwall

T

ake a journey to the centre of the earth (almost) with a trip to see these curiously titled underground caves.

Located on the Trelowarren Estate, the caves are part of an Iron Age settlement from the 5th or 4th century BC, and were accidentally ‘discovered’ a few years ago when a farmer’s plough pierced their roof. Good thing it did, otherwise the caves would have been forgotten about forever.

Even so, it’s not entirely clear what this mysterious grotto was built for all those years ago. Various opinions have been put forward; perhaps they were places to store valuables? Or refuges for hunters to hide in? Our favourite theory is that they were used as part of ancient ceremonies and rituals.

The effort that went into constructing them certainly shows they were pretty important to the community (and still are).Whatever the truth on that front, there’s a prize* if you can pronounce the name properly (it’s ‘foo-goo’ – the old Cornish word for cave) and it’s free to get in (you just ‘pay and display’ in the car park).

So why not bring the whole gang along for a lesson in Iron Age history. One word of advice however – bring your own torch…

(*FYI, we’re joking about the prize)
