Stroll along the 900-year-old Shambles

Y

ork is a great place for romance on a budget as it has some of the most picturesque streets in England. Simply walking down the 900-year-old Shambles together give you a tingle down your spine. But it’s not all ancient history here.

There are plenty of modern shops to browse from Vivienne Westwood down Blake Street, Cath Kidston on Stonegate and the wonderful Selkie on Low Petersgate.

One of the most romantic times of year to visit, is on a crisp wintery day. Go into York Minster, the largest medieval gothic cathedral in northern Europe with its famous Rose Window and see it lit by candlelight. Take a walk by the picturesque River Ouse or even a quick boat trip.

There are plenty of great riverside pubs like the Kings Arms where you can see the watermarks on the wall where past floods have engulfed the place.

If you want a real taste of York, head to Bettys Café Tea Rooms in St Helens Square for a mean cup of Yorkshire tea and comfort food of the highest quality. Sweet nothings over a Yorkshire Rarebit anyone? Come nightfall there are spooky Ghost Tours. A great excuse to hold one another tight.
