Get yer tights on and be merry
M
ention Nottingham to most people and there’s a good chance they’ll think of Robin Hood.
Along with fashion designer Sir Paul Smith and Brian Clough – legendary manager of the town’s beloved football club – the fabled robber of the rich is more famous now than when he was romping round the woods in tights.
No one’s sure exactly when that was, but records of a ‘Robinhood’, ‘Robehod’ and other variations appear in English legal documents from around 1228 onwards.
Make up your own mind on which is true – and which folkore – by following in his winklepickers on the Robin Hood trail.
Start in the city with a tour of Nottingham Castle, lair of the ‘evil’ Sheriff of Nottingham – who definitely did exist, and lived here in the late 12th-century – before heading on to Thieves Wood (where the outlaws lurked) and Fountaindale – where Robin is supposed to have met Friar Tuck.
There’s a downloadable sat’ nav’ guide – and an audio Podcast – so finding your way is easy. And if you’re really keen, why not book yourselves an archery lesson in Sherwood itself.
