Quite literally how we used to work

I

f you find yourself having internet rage because your broadband connection’s a bit slow – or it’s the end of the world whenever you lose phone signal, maybe you should nip to Morwellham Quay for the day?

This open-air museum in Devon gives you a glimpse of what life was like in Victorian times, before all the bleeping gadgets we take for granted these days.

What you’ll find is a historic port, copper mine, working Victorian farm, railway and replica village, (yep, there’s a lot to see) surrounded by rather gorgeous Devon countryside. No wonder UNESCO gave it World Heritage Site status in 2006.

You can take a ride along the banks of the River Tamar on the narrow-gauge Mine Railway, before making your own Jules Verne-style ‘journey to the centre of the earth’ in the George and Charlotte copper mine. One look at the harsh working conditions that the Victorian miners had to endure here is enough to send shivers down your spine. Health and safety – in those days was a tad – how you say? – ‘relaxed’.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. Back on the surface you’ve got 200 acres of meadows, nature trails and riverside hides to relax in – and of course the Victorian Farm, where you’ll see folks dressed up in contemporary costume.

It’s so convincing, you’ll be wondering where you parked the horse and cart…
