The only restaurant and bar in a cave in the whole of Europe

G

ranted, a cave isn’t the obvious place to enjoy a quick pick-me-up, but Marsden Grotto  has a long (and chequered) history of dealings with the hard stuff.

Back in the 18th-Century, smugglers used the place to hide their bounty, and probably had something to do with the skeletons discovered here during a 19th-Century excavation. Don’t worry, though, it’s a lot more civilised nowadays.

The grotto’s landlord is licensed to sell all manner of ales, wines and spirits, which you can sip while soaking up the dramatic views over Whitley Bay  . And if you’re after more stunning vistas, try heading to nearby St Mary’s Lighthouse, where you can look along the coast and out over the North Sea.

Perched on a miniature island, the lighthouse is fondly described as “part-time”, thanks to the tide that cuts off its causeway. But if climbing 137 steps seems like too much faff for a good view, you’ll be pleased to know there’s a live video feed on the ground level, allowing you to experience the same vista without the huff and puff.

Whether you take the stairs or watch the screen, the best way to round off the day is with a plate of fish and chips at Coleman’s – officially named the best in England. Salt and vinegar with that?
