A working farm slap bang in Wimbledon

Y

ou don’t get many tractors down South Wimbledon way, so if you spot one, chances are it’s heading to Deen City Farm. Follow it and you’ll find your way to a fully working farm in the middle of the city – with animals, a veggie patch and everything.

Don the wellies – and the flat cap if you must – and get ready to get countryside mucky. Say hello to Henry the calf (apparently he’s a terrific dancer), get up-close and personal with everything from sheep to hens, and learn what a Toggenburg is (a rare breed of goat, since you ask).

The award-winning gardens have been created by volunteers, and everyone’s welcome to lend a hand or look around. Try and find your way to the centre of the maze or take a green-fingered tour to learn about the environment and horticulture. If you get really into it, you can even tend and grow your own veg to take home.

While you’re here why not let the kids live out the most common farm fantasy and have a pony ride. The Riding School offers lessons and short rides, as well as Own a Pony days for particularly keen wannabe equestrians.
