Part of the romantic Combermere Abbey Estate

I

f you’re looking for a more fun way to get your five-a-day, you might want to pay this place a visit. The walled gardens at Combermere Abbey, on the Shropshire/Cheshire border, have the distinct honour of housing the only fruit tree maze in the world.

It’s like an enormous Pick-Your-Own but a lot more exciting. Open between April and October, you’ll find juicy gooseberries and redcurrants curving around the outer edge, then once you get further inside, the scent of apples and pears takes over – enticing you the half mile towards the elegant, gold-tipped glasshouse that lies in the centre.

Your reward is a 180-degree view across alleyways and avenues of fruit – the only challenge: finding your way out. Once you do, there are two other, rather gorgeous, gardens to explore; and if you’re still feeling fruity, you could always call in at the shop before you leave and grab some of this season’s fruit maze crop of homemade jams, juices and chutneys.

A little something to remember the place by at breakfast the next morning.
