No concessions for ducks
O
f course the performances are the main attraction at this imaginatively-named playhouse, but trust us, you’ll look forward to the intervals, too.
With the shores of Derwentwater just a stone’s throw away (no, really), and the mountains of the Lake District rising behind, the backdrop to this place is suitably dramatic – even for a theatre.
Just keep your peanuts away from the resident sheep and ducks, who nonchalantly plod past. Don’t worry; they’re perfectly safe and any diva-esque behaviour is strictly prohibited.
For all the Lake District local ambiance, the theatre’s performances are impressively international, with plays by Tennessee Williams, Joe Orton and Jane Austen having appeared on the programme.
And the art doesn’t stop there, either, the theatre hosting an exhibition of local paintings, and the annual Words By The Water literature festival each March. Feeling inspired? We certainly were.
