t may not look like it from the outside, but Norwich’s Theatre Royal is all Art Deco cool. The building might have had a £10 million facelift in 2007, but as soon as you step inside the auditorium you’re transported back to the roaring 1920s, with the retro surroundings adding to the atmosphere of any production.

As with all things in Norwich, the 1300 seat venue’s history stretches even further back. The theatre first opened on the site back in January 1758, although you’ll be glad to hear that the technology is all bang up-to-date with upgraded acoustics in the auditorium. Technically minded types can also take a technical tour, where theatre technicians show off all the latest knobs, buttons and gadget wizardry.

Still, this artful melding of old and new is all well and good, but what about the actual performances? Whether you’re after cutting-edge plays that push the boundaries of contemporary theatre, or a good old belly laugh at the latest comedians, the Theatre Royal has it all.

Acting heavyweights Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellan are regulars, although if you’re after the more simple and consistent pleasures in life then the annual pantomime is always a great way to join in some collective booing.
