No popcorn, just Art Deco cool...

W

hen a cinema proudly announces that they “don’t sell popcorn,” you know you’re dealing with something different.

Enter the world of the Electric Cinema on Birmingham’s busy Station Street, the UK’s oldest working cinema, and one of the few places in the UK with a working Absinthe Fountain.

From the moment you walk in there’s a distinct air of class. Built in 1909, the beautiful Art Deco building has seen a recent renovation reveal the classic foyer and bar area. The detailing is so precise it extends to the snacks. The Electric Ices are locally made organic ice creams with such flavours as plum, cinnamon & Amaretto: perfect for munching on while enjoying the best in modern independent flicks.

Enter the screen area and you’ll be shown to your seat by a torch-carrying usher, and have a choice of large, laid-back velvet seats, or the luxurious double-seater leather couches at the back. And as it’s a fully-licensed premises, either take a few beers (or that absinthe) with you, or order them via the texting service built into the leather area, where it’ll be delivered to your seat within moments.

All set then, for the yawn-stretch-arm-around-your-loved-one moment in some lovely surroundings. Sounds good right? Check out the virtual tour on the Electric Cinema website to know more about this incredible gem.
