Hire a Triumph TR4A for oodles of cool-Britannia design or the Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite to turn those heads and inspire envious horn-honking from other drivers.
 
With the car selected, all that’s left to do is pick your route, don the flat cap, wrap the headscarf, and hit the open road. The Cumbrian countryside will soon become a blur of green, pricked with occasional explosions of colour from wildflowers and the fluttering of a disturbed red grouse as your Austin Healey 3 litre engine lets rip.
 
There’s no better backdrop for an al fresco lunch than the Lakes so pull over, get the picnic hamper from the boot and drink in those views. It won’t be long though before the urge to put your pedal to the metal takes over. Don’t fight it.
