Up close with birds of prey

E

ver wondered what it's like to have a falcon land on your arm?

Book yourself in for a flying session with Falconry Days at Lady Hill Farm in Simonburn, Northumberland, and you'll quickly realise that they're a lot heavier than you think.

Aside from falcons, the avian experts at the farm have got a range of magnificent birds of prey for you to meet – including hawks, eagles, owls and vultures.

If you're coming here with the whole gang, why not book yourselves in for the Family Activity Experience, where you get to meet the resident owls and give them a stroke, before being shown how to fly them. As well as meeting the cheeky ferrets who also live here, you'll then head out into the nearby woods on a rather exciting 'hawk walk'.

However, it's the full Falconry Experience that we prefer. From 10am 'til 4pm you'll get up-close and personal with a range of birds from around the world, with an instructor on hand to show you how to fly them all.

And having them landing on your outstretched arm is only half of it; wait ‘til you feel the breeze as they swoop past, just inches from your head. Makes you wonder what it's like to be a poor mouse...
