Keep your eyes open for conger eels

P

icture this... It’s a sunny day, you’re bobbing about on a boat off the Cornish coast – fishing line in hand, thermos by your side and a good group of mates all waiting to catch something for supper.

But instead of reeling in the usual tiddler, you end up catching Jaws’ little brother. Well, maybe his distant cousin.

Either way it’s pretty exhilarating stuff – and just the kind of thing you can expect on a day’s shark fishing from Looe, Cornwall. You can’t keep it (of course), just tag it and let it go; but still – it’ll make a great picture to email to the guys at work.

If, on the other hand, you’d rather catch something you can eat, then the good news is that pollock is pretty common round here, too – as are bass and cod come the autumn. To really impress your mates, though, you’ll need to land a conger eel. Apparently it’s a regular to these parts, and sports a suitably toothy grin for the all-important photo.

Back on dry land, why not have your catch cleaned and gutted at the harbour, then take it home for dinner. Who’s for hand-caught fish and chips?
