Outdoor activities for a unique weekend

F

orget Pot Noodles slowly congealing over a gas stove, wet sleeping bags and missing socks. Enrol on a bushcraft course with Adrian Boots (yes that is his real name) and you’ll learn how to camp the proper way.

That means discovering how to live off – and on – the land. Setting out into the Mendip Hills in Somerset, you’ll collect berries, nettles and other goodies for a delicious cook-up over the fire, find out how to skin and prepare a rabbit or pheasant, build yourself a shelter and whittle cutlery out of wood. Grrr.

Not only that, but a weekend with Mr Boots gives you an insight into the history of this ancient Somerset landscape, flora and fauna, too – giving you a whole new appreciation of Mother Nature.

If camping just isn’t your bag, though, you could always try a mountain biking trip instead. Choose from half-day trail rides to over night itineraries – or walks that combine the gorgeous Mendip Hills scenery with foraging for wild food like mushrooms and wild garlic.

At the end of all that you get to spend the night at the cosy Ashcroft House B&B. Even Bear Grylls allegedly checks into more conventional accommodation occasionally.
