Chester claims to be Britain's most haunted city with more ghosts per square mile than any other! The basis for these claims being that after the Romans left, Chester became home to successive waves of Celts, Vikings, Saxons and Normans and so has seen every 'high and low of human existence: joy and jubilation, famine, floods, plague and war'. It's not surprising then, that within Chester's walls, there are a host of ghosts, hauntings and poltergeists spanning across two millennia.

For example the ancient footfalls of Roman legionary regularly heard in the George and Dragon pub on the course of a Roman road leading from the Northgate, or Porta Decumana. Another at the Old Bishops Palace - a spirit of cruelly treated Victorian bootboy moves shoes and boots around large Georgian house. The list goes on...

Not too sure whether I believe in this sort of thing to be honest, but it certainly makes for interesting reading. Has anyone else got any 'haunted' places to add?

We have a page on our site about haunted places to stay in England

Apparently one of the places listed on this page lost a booking because the customer was too scared to stay there after reading about the resident ghost on this feature! d'oh!

Apparently, once a year on the anniversary of her execution Anne Boleyn is seen travelling in a carriage up the drive to the front of Blickling Hall in Norfolk with her severed head in her lap. The carriage is pulled by headless horses and driven by a headless horseman! The carriage disappears when it reaches Blickling Hall leaving the ghost of Anne Boleyn alone at the entrance. Sweet dreams everybody. Woooohhhhhooooaaaa!!! Boo hoo! Boo hoo! Boo hoo! Shhh Anxious

Or does anyone fancy a visit to Parsonage Wood above Castle Coombe in Wiltshire.

The wood lies above the pretty village of Castle Coombe. Apparently only the very brave venture into these woods on a winter’s night. Many people have been alarmed by the sudden sound of disembodied voices, chattering excitedly in the darkness. As the voices get louder, they are joined by the groans of someone apparently suffering pain. Then a loud scream and all is quiet. No–one knows for sure what lies behind the strange noises, but few who experience it, venture into Parsonage Wood again....
Shhh

I definitely think we should send him there. Especially if it's late at night!
I am sure that he would be very keen to go as well.

I don't think we'd be that cruel. Maybe just send him in there for an hour or two?
