Family holiday help!

We are an extended family, we have 3 children 2 girls aged 6&7 and a teenage boy.

We have suddenly found ourselves with some spare time at the end of August that means we are all able to take some time for a 'holiday'

The timings seem to not work with large holiday companies, as we want to go on Wednesday 27th Aug and come home on the Wednesday 3rd September.

I think we are looking in England, as the holidays abroad are very expensive as the teenager has to pay adult prices.

We would like to go camping somewhere that has enough entertainment to suit our children with the large age gap.

The other problem we have is we both purchased cars that are unsitable for family holidays meaning we are likely to have to take the 2 cars, because of the car seat problem squashing the person having to sit in the middle!

Money is a little tight at the moment too (as it is for everyone!)

We live in the Reading, Berkshire location.

Help!!

I'm new by the way, so : "hello"

Hi jlb welcome to the forum. I would probably try the camping route I would imagine it would be the most economical. Certainly some of the smaller campsites that we have viisted in the past have accepted campers any day of the week.

The first camping trip we did was to Cloud Farm in the Doone Valley on Exmoor. They are very flexible and although they do not accept bookings the guy who runs the site assured us that they had never turned anyone away. It is situated right on Exmoor and next to a river which is great for children of all ages and adults too!

We are usually very unorganised and rarely book anywhere in advance but seem to always muddle through sometimes if you call particular campsites that happen to be full the owners can often recommend somewhere close by that may have vacancies.

As far as the car situation you could always get a roofbox or failing that most children are happy to be a bit squashed if they are going holiday! We have travelled in our very small car with our own two girls 4 and 6 our 13 year old nephew and a large greyhound (I think she was probably the most comfortable)...

Hello jlb

Camping sounds like a great idea. I remember camping holidays as a youngster and thinking they were great fun. There are opportunities for everyone to muck in with getting the fire going (if you choose somewhere you can light fires - ukcampsite) and cooking dinner etc too if you're looking for a good family get together and spending quality time.
