You need a map, dice, a car, a navigator, an adventuress spirit, a sense of humour and preferably some kids to back-you-up that it’s “only a game”.

You decide with the dice, which designates north, south, east and west and roll it. Obviously if you live on the east coast, for instance, you’re not going to be heading east. So once you’ve decided which direction you’re going to be heading in, you roll for the number of miles/kilometres of travel the tour is going to be. As the greatest number is six, you will have to decide beforehand whether to double, treble, or whatever. You can either plan the route out before hand on the map, (a 1:50,000/1 inch map is preferable as it cuts out the smaller streets) or as you drive along. Playing the game while driving is not the best idea, as a snap decision to turn left or right could end up with an accident, so plan ahead and or make sure you’ve stopped the car before the next decision is made.

So say you’ve rolled 18 for 18k, which is roughly 18 grid squares and that then is distance you have to travel. Now the fun part. The first dice is for directions – odd numbers equal left, evens equal right. The second dice is for number of turns – the number equals the number of turning to the left or right. So say you throw a 3 with the first dice, that means you are going to turn left and a 5 with the second dice means you are going to take the fifth turning to the left. You’ve obviously got to discount farm tracks, which are private, but if you end in one you have to go no further, but throw again to decide the direction of travel, as a penalty. You will end in some strange places you’ve never been before and even go round in circles, but that’s the fun part. I hope you enjoy it.

fantastic! I've always wanted to do something like this but never suggested it. Great idea and something I'll definitely be doing with my family soon Applause
