as well as the A272 between Uckfield (East Sussex) and Winchester, which is awesome I'd suggest the A29 from Capel to Bognor Regis and the A281 between Guildford and Pyecombe in West Sussex.

Hi Varangarian. You certainly sound knowledgeable about England. Where is the best place you have visited, away from the more touristy places? Keen to try some where new this bank holiday. Thanks

Hi Nicole. Best place? Very difficult to say - I can never get enough of Kings' Sutton though (train from Marylebone) due to the Saint Rumwold connection (from my book). All 'his' places are worth seeing. Evesham is great for a visit too. For a bit of a trek, you could do Melton Mowbray (pork pies and cheese, huge church, Anne of Cleves, lots of odd objects scattered about) and then back one train stop to Oakham, Rutland (castle like a house, good little museum, the whole effect of a miniature county town in a miniature county) then Uppingham by bus (endless book and craft shops and the big school). Worth it!

Thanks for those ideas. With 2 bank holidays next month would be a pity to waste them sitting at home.

Hello everybody. We are driving from Heathrow to Salisbury and do not want to be rushed at all. Does anyone have any suggestions on quite places or wildlife areas to visit just to help reduce jet lag after arriving from Canada & before arrival in Salisbury? We are old duffers and have all the time in the world just to have fun.

Hi lauraplusterry. Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a great trip! Depending on what time of day you are arriving you could always stop off at Northington Grange which is near Micheldever in Hampshire it looks like the perfect place to relax! Or you could take a little detour to the lovely city of Winchester with its beautiful cathedral. Have a wonderful trip!
