My favourite english artist of the moment is Banksy - does anyone think this counts as true modern art??
I spotted a little stencil of his near where I live - opposite where Princess Di used to live in Pimlico.

Does it matter whether it counts as true modern art? The question is do you like it? I like the one he did of the maid sweeping the dirt under a curtain. It always makes me smile :)

Here's a great one - an alternative postcard of London - I actually loved his art on the West Bank and in Gaza.

Graffiti in it's own right is art, and Banksy is just one form of street artist that has taken off. People tend to forget and more so disregard where this form of creative expression comes from. From Urban decay, youthful expression and also rooted from Hip Hop, street art exploded in the 70's in New York.

Is stencil now just everyones piece of cake these days, with copycats and lost talent.

Does it lack originality
Bagsy Stencil, grafitti

What ever happened to the art of Aerosol art, not painting cardboard cut outs.

I think there's a degree of lack of talent and understanding of Aerosol art - after all the New York subway trains of the 70's and 80's with huge murals on were not mirrored in England, rather the anti-social and rather pathetic 'tagging' movement took hold. Banksy has captured public imagination due to his political and social commentary in his art, along with a good sense of humour :)
Some of the skate parks in London have some great mural's, and events such as the "Breakin Convention" (Breakdancing Convention) have featured additional plyboard boarding outside for Graffiti Artists to practise their urban art and display some of the fantastic work they're capable of.
I do like the bagsy tho!

I think its Art, but its many layers because of its political statements, much like how William Hogarth was in the 1700's. I especially like what he did in Israel along that wall they're building. Think its very poignant compare to other artists, I still have trouble trying to understand Tracey Emin's work for example. Then again you're looking at someone who thinks Yves Klein is good!

Any second-lifers will be interested in this:
A virtual Banksy Gallery has been launched in the Topaz region of Second Life (Topaz/89/34/28.) Charlie Backwell (aka Charmarley Nightfire) from Bristol has launched an area in Second Life called "Banksy's Ghetto" where 400 virtual pieces of Banksy's work are on display.
It's probably the easiest way of seeing all of Banksy's art altogether without travelling round the world! Although I wonder if they'll have a pink elephant in the room...

Banksy has to be one of my favourite artists. He talent is immense. I also think the fact that no one knows who is adds to his appeal. However, I can not believe how pricey his work is now though. But at least with things like second life we can all appreciate it - even if it's just online.

Actually the beauty of Banksy is that all his art work is in public areas (not only public galleries) that will be seen by people who will never realise its "a banksy".
Theres some amusing stories about Banksy - Liverpool brings two of my favourite to mind - 2 scousers tried stealing a door with some Banksy art work - they couldn't lift it up!
And then Liverpool Council tried to cover up a 30 foot Banksy saying it was an eyesore - 1 week before the launch of the Capital of Culture.....

Definitely Art! Graffiti art, but still... it's popular Art, which is why I like Banksy. BTW at the Greenwich arts and crafts fair there's a stall selling postcards of Banksy, you should check it out!

I really rate Banksy and love the idea of art being surprising and popping up in areas you wouldn't expect. I think Banksy's work is challenging and cheeky but most of all it's accessible to all.

Love the postcard! Dancing

Does he have to be commissioned to do these, or does he just do them regardless (ie. grafitti)...?

Its all done spur of the moment - as he's "unknown" he can't be commisioned.
However there was a bonham's auction (that unfortunately I missed as I didn't know about it too late) this week... I'd love a Banksy for my hallway...
Tho not the pink elephant ;)

Surely somebody knows who is behind the artwork, no?

I'd have thought with CCTV, etc. it would be relatively straight forward to identify in somewhere like London.

I think someone got a cameraphone pic of him.. but it was a bit blurry! Apparently he wears a hoody and cap to avoid the cameras!
If your interested there's a new exhibition of his work in Knightsbridge London!

Banksy art exhibition at the Andipa Gallery
Besides Banksy, the gallery also exhibits artists like Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and Lichtenstein, as well as YBA favourite Damien Hirst. Although the exhibition contains many works by Banksy, all the artwork was privately loaned just for this show. It’s a mark of his popularity that his art is on display at a Knightsbridge gallery – a far cry from the East End.

The Banksy art exhibition is on view at the Andipa Gallery, 162 Walton Street, Knightsbridge, from 29th February to 29th March 2008. Nearest tube: South Kensington.

Admission is free. Gallery hours are 9.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 11am to 6pm Saturday. For more information call 020 7589 2371.

Looks great, though I haven't had a chance to go yet. I had no idea how much the elusive artists' work sold for - £280,000 was the price tag attached to one of his pieces - I think I may be saving for some while!
