Settle
At the heart of Ribblesdale is charming Settle, a quaint market town standing beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain. The area surrounding Settle is full of cliffs, caves, scars and potholes.
Settleās picturesque market place is overlooked by the Shambles, a charming row of arcaded houses once visited by a young composer called Edward Elgar. The market place is at its most lively and colourful on Tuesdays, when the weekly market is held, attracting traders from far and wide.
Settle also marks the start of one of the country's best loved railway lines, the Settle-Carlisle Railway. Completed in 1879 after six years of hard work, this is one of the greatest feats of Victorian engineering.
