Runswick

Runswick Bay

Runswick is a quintessential fishing village on the beautiful Heritage Coast area of the North York Moors National Park.

This quiet place is situated at the northern end of a beautiful sandy beach and is packed with chocolate-box pretty cottages with colourful gardens. Keep an eye out for the pretty thatched cottage on the seafront – it’s the only remaining thatched house on the Yorkshire coast!

The cottages appear to cling precariously to the hillside and the village is built on slippery Jurassic shales that make the area prone to landslides. In fact, the entire village slipped into the sea one dark night in 1682 and had to be rebuilt!

Take your time to wander round the village and admire the colourful boats on the seafront. If you fancy stretching your legs, you can join the Cleveland Way National Trail (North Sea Trail) along the dramatic coastline towards Staithes or Sandsend. Runswick is also a great place to look for fossils on the beach!
