Masham

Black Sheep Brewery

Masham is a traditional Yorkshire market town: markets are still held every Wednesday and Saturday where local produce, arts and crafts can be bought. The town is also the home of two of the finest breweries in Yorkshire – the Black Sheep Brewery and Theakston’s Brewery – both of which are open to the public. Famous for the quality of their beer, you can taste some of their speciality ales on a guided tour, and find out more at their fascinating visitor centres.

Another popular attraction is Uredale Glass, a traditional glass blowing workshop which holds demonstrations of glass blowing and glass crafts. Local residents are very proud of their annual Sheep Fair, held every September, and in July the Steam Engine and Fair Organ Rally attracts exhibitors and visitors from far and wide.

On the edge of the market square is St Mary’s Church, which dates from the 11th century. It overlooks the beautiful surrounding countryside which is the natural gateway for Wensleydale, famed for its cheese.
