Levisham
The secluded village of Levisham is a traditional farming village and is tucked away amidst rolling hills and moorland.
Popular with people using the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway and walkers, its cottages are arranged either side of a beautiful village green.
The village is a gateway to some of the most dramatic scenery and best walking in the entire National Park. Nearby Levisham Estate offers 1359 hectares of spectacular moorland, woodland and farmland, owned by the National Park Authority. Walk for miles across the heather, discover the ruined Skelton Tower, admire the scenic Newtondale Valley or learn about the wealth of archaeology that make this place one of the largest Scheduled Monuments in England.
The Hole of Horcum is not far away and is probably the most photographed location in the National Park. Legend states that this huge natural amphitheatre was created by the giant Wade but really it was formed by rainwater seeping down through porous rock. When the water reaches an impenetrable layer of clay, the water is forced to the surface. The springs have caused numerous small landslides which have progressively widened the Hole.
It’s only a short distance to Levisham Station where you can jump aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway towards Goathland or Pickering. Newtondale Halt, a little further up the valley, is a request stop for walkers and a great choice for exploring Levisham Estate on foot.
