Horton in Ribblesdale

Horton in Ribblesdale

The name Horton literally means 'settlement on muddy ground'. The village lies on the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway Line and it was the arrival of the railway which made the quarrying of limestone in the area profitable. Horton is probably most famous as the starting point for the gruelling 3-Peaks Walk.

Dramatic and uncompromising, this area is better known as the Three Peaks and stands apart. Dotted with rock scars and limestone pavements, it is dominated by the looming peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside and honeycombed by miles of caves and potholes.

Must see and do
