Herriot Country

White Horse

Herriot Country is an area of North Yorkshire famed for being the inspiration for one of the world’s best loved writers, James Herriot

Herriot, alias real-life vet Alf Wright, lived and worked in the market town of Thirsk for more than 50 years and it was from this quiet corner of North Yorkshire that he drew inspiration for his tales of veterinary life. Thirsk, the Darrowby of his books, is now home to a unique tribute to the author. 'The World of James Herriot' is based in his original home and surgery, and combines technology with history, nostalgia, science and education.

Captain James Cook, the great explorer, also lived in this area: he spent his childhood in the village of Great Ayton. The school where he was educated now houses an exciting museum celebrating his life and achievements.

Herriot County is an ideal base from which to tour and explore the Moors and Dales of North Yorkshire, as well as the historic city of York. There is plenty for the visitor to enjoy – attractive market towns, historic houses, family attractions, locally produced food and drink, craft centres, agricultural shows and activities for all ages – all wrapped up in true Yorkshire hospitality.
