Grosmont

The peaceful village of Grosmont lies in the beautiful Esk Valley and has a fascinating history. The village grew in the nineteenth century when ironstone was discovered in 1836.

Grosmont can be reached on the wonderful North Yorkshire Moors Railway – a steam railway that winds its way for eighteen miles through the National Park from Pickering. You can jump on or off at one of several stations along the way including Goathland, Newtondale and Levisham. Goathland also has an adjoining platform for the Esk Valley Railway and you can travel up to Middlesbrough or the fishing port of Whitby.

It’s a fantastic place to start a walk – why not try The Rail Trail which combines a ride on the train with a three and a half mile walk? You can find out more about the trail and other walks at the National Park Information Point – located in the Grosmont Trading Post.
