Great Ayton

Low Green

Captain Cook lived in Great Ayton from the age of eight to 16, when he left to work in Staithes. He was educated in the village and the school he attended is now a museum devoted to his early life as well as his later achievements. Spend time visiting the 12th-century All Saints Church, which the Cook family regularly attended; see the James Cook sculpture on High Green; and walk along the banks of the picturesque River Leven.
