Goathland

Goathland Landscape

This village in the heart of the National Park has attracted visitors since the 19th century. Its famous connections have seen numbers soar in recent years – it was the setting for Aidensfield in the TV series Heartbeat and the station became Hogsmeade Station in the recent Harry Potter film.

The village is laid out around a grassy area of open common land, popular with the tame black-faced sheep that graze the surrounding moorland. The owners of these sheep hold common right, just as their predecessors have done for hundreds of years.

You can reach Goathland on the wonderful steam railway from Pickering, preserved and run by enthusiasts since 1973 and the station looks as it would have done over a hundred years ago.

There’s plenty to see and do in the area. A Roman Road passes nearby on Wheeldale Moor and its hardcore and drainage ditches can still be seen. It’s only a gentle stroll from the village to spectacular views of Mallyan Spout – a 70 feet high waterfall. Or if you are looking for a longer walk, The Rail Trail from Goathland to Grosmont combines a ride on the steam train with a three and a half mile walk.
