Coxwold
Coxwold is a fantastic place to stroll around with its attractive architecture and imposing parish church.
Learn all about the world famous author Laurence Sterne, who wrote ‘Tristram Shandy’ and ‘A Sentimental Journey’, on a visit to Shandy Hall. The author lived here between 1760 and 1768 whilst writing the novels and you can explore the beautiful wildflower garden and eclectic style house.
Don’t miss the parish church, which dominates the village, and Coxwold also has many fascinating religious links. Newburgh Priory is the site of a priory of Augustinian canons built in the 12th century. Today, it is a country mansion steeped in tradition. It is rumoured that the headless corpse of Oliver Cromwell was secretly brought to Newburgh Priory by his daughter and placed in a brick tomb. The tomb has never been opened to prove the tale…
The ruins of Byland Abbey, standing beneath the beautiful Hambleton Hills, are also well worth a visit. Byland was one of the three great monastic houses of the north and its stunning features include elaborate mosaic tiles and a great rose window.
